Scripture Passage

Nehemiah 5:1-13

Reflection

Nehemiah wore many hats. Prayer leader, material solicitor, volunteer manager, builder, finance man…the list goes beyond what my mind can imagine. But in this week’s passage, he is the fierce guard of his brothers’ and sisters’ dignity. He speaks plainly, bold to call out the unkindness and abuses of God’s people (even confessing himself) toward more of God’s people. As he plainly says, “What you are doing is not right,” he also asks “Ought you not walk in the fear of the Lord?” Consider the many places in scripture where we are called to the fear of the Lord. Let us ask ourselves if our view and treatment of others reveals a fear of the Lord (which is accompanied by promise after promise) or a fear of something else – the approval of man, financial insecurity, lack of comfort…

Oh, how abundant is your goodness,

which you have stored up for those who fear you

and worked for those who take refuge in you,

in the sight of the children of mankind! – Psalm 31:19.
